Affirmative Action in politics on Wed, Jul 22. 2009
Affirmative action is needs to just go away. I respect the goal behind idea, but it just never worked correctly.
Affirmative action is the sort of gibberish policy you get when you let progressives loose at liberal issues.
"Everyone should be treated the same, and, to prove it, we're going to treat these people better because historically they were treated worse." Huh?
You should not try to make people 'freer' with progressive policies, because progressive policies inherently make some people better off at the expense of others, and that just breeds resentment, especially if done obviously. It's like Robin Hood robbing from the rich to feed the poor...in an attempt to get the rich to provide better pay for the poor. Both those goals are noble, but can't possibly be openly done by a single person at the same time.
Progressive policies should be aimed at helping the majority of people, at the expense of people who can afford it, not helping some poor people get jobs at the expenses of other poor people. And liberal policies should be aimed at removing barriers to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, not at adding new ones to try to 'make up' for old ones. Affirmative action has managed to be a misfire of both principles.
